This is a portrait of a friends and family that suffered devastating damage from Hurricane Sandy on Staten Island. The inspiration for this piece was the steamer trunk, which was in my studio basement waiting to be used in a sculpture. After Sandy I found it floating in five feet of water. After talking about it to my friend, it was decided that I would create a portrait of the suffering her family had endured. All of the detritus in the sculpture is from the yard of their house on Staten Island, the painting in the center of the sculpture was painted by the father, owner of the home, and the angel wind chimes were his wife’s...who had long passed.
