Ode to the Albatross (Statement)

Our current geological age, is viewed as the period during which HUMAN activity has been the dominant influence on CLIMATE and ENVIRONMENT. Yup, that’s us.

ANTHROPOCENE

The Albatross is the largest seabird on the planet with a wingspan that can reach 11 feet. These wings are just 6 feet. They nest and raise their young on little islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They feed their young by skimming the surface of the ocean for fish, but often mistake floating plastic as food, which they feed to their babies – who either starve to death, or are internally impaled, or poisoned by the plastic. Even under these circumstances, most of the albatross are still surviving…

The objects in the wings of this sculpture are slightly hidden by the black and white ‘feathers’, but look closely and you can see toothbrushes and cigarette lighters just to name a few. These objects came from the bellies of the chic’s that did not survive. Chris Jordan, a world-renowned photographer sent me these objects that he himself brought back from the Midway Atoll islands. He created an amazing documentary about the Albatross. Albatross The Film (2017).

This is completely and totally our doing.
